High School Music
High School Music at PHAA is designed to build on the basic knowledge of elementary music, to allow for the development of a more sophisticated grasp of the language of music and prepare our students to participate in collegiate ensembles in the future. Sight-reading skills, musicality, vocal and breathing techniques are just some of the skills that are emphasized. The following ensembles are currently offered:
High School Band: Band provides all students an opportunity for expression, musicianship and teamwork with others in order to communicate a musical message to those listening. Emphasis is placed on developing skill on individual instruments as well as working on ensemble musicality through standard sacred and secular band/wind ensemble repertoire. Band is open to all students who can demonstrate playing ability on a wind or percussion instrument. This class is a year-long commitment and may be repeated for additional credit.
High School Choir: Choir provides an opportunity for personal expression, musicianship and teamwork with others in order to communicate a musical message. Emphasis will be placed on proper vocal technique and sight-reading. In practicing and performing choral literature from many different genres, choir students will grow musically and spiritually as they discover the ministry that music holds.
Choir is open to all students and is a year-long commitment. It may be repeated for additional credit.
Choralaires: As our select choir, Choralaires is an auditioned ensemble of a set number of voices within each vocal part. By performing more difficult pieces than Choir, Choralaires expands on and adds focus to individual musicianship, sight-reading, positive attitude, confidence, leadership and talent. Choralaires performs throughout the year at churches, civic events such as Christmas at the Capitol and music festivals. Choralaires is open to students by audition only and is a year-long commitment. It may be repeated for additional credit.
High School Strings: String Orchestra is an advanced string ensemble that practices and performs music from the standard concert string orchestra and chamber music literature. Students will learn shifting and 2-3 octave scales and arpeggios. Assessment includes period practice checks through Smart Music technology, comprehensive playing exams and public performances. String Orchestra is open to all students who can demonstrate playing ability on a stringed instrument and is a year-long commitment. It may be repeated for additional credit.
